Let a horse whisper in your ear and breathe on your heart and you’ll never regret it – Anonymous

I fell in love with this sweet legacy session with Sonja and her senior thoroughbred gelding, Shivers. Spending time with these two was the best way to enjoy a beautiful summer night and I’m so glad we had the chance <3

What is a legacy session? Legacy sessions are special sessions I offer for elderly or terminally-ill horses. Legacy – because that’s what we focus on: the legacy of your emotional bond. The legacy of all the lessons learned and experiences and adventures you’ve lived together. These sessions aren’t about action shots, props, or glitter. They’re simple, brief and uncomplicated. Just you two.

If you would like more information about legacy sessions in the Edmonton area or beyond, send me a message through the Contact page or send me a quick email at hello {at} megankruse.ca

I’m happy to share this beautiful session from September with gorgeous mama-to-be, Jacqueline, her pup Daly, and her sweet gelding Ridley! During this session, we were attacked constantly by billions of mosquitos as the fields surrounding us were being swathed, but we managed to capture some lovely memories for this cowgirl and in the most beautiful evening light too. As a photographer, being able to help my clients preserve milestones and memories like these are worth all the mosquito bites! If you want a session like this for yourself, give me a shout at hello@megankruse.ca

I was super excited to be at the Stony Plain Tack Sale again yesterday, repping my photography work and meeting tons of great people – and for once not shopping (haha). If you haven’t been to this bi-annual tack sale before, you are seriously missing out! Even with the early snow and icy conditions, there was a good turn out and great deals to be had. Big thanks to everyone who helped organize this great event this time around and to everyone who stopped by to visit my booth. Especially those who brought coffee – y’all are amazing <3 Mark your calendars – the next tack sale is set for March 11, 2017!

The thing I was most excited to promote at the sale is my upcoming – get ready for it – Christmas promotion. I’m one of those people who actually cringes when I see Christmas stuff in the stores before Remembrance Day, but with the early snow this year I thought I’d at least get the word out now!

For a limited time, I’m offering these mini sessions for $149. Package includes a 30 minute mini session, 25 Christmas cards, 5 Facebook photos and an 8×10 print PLUS travel within the Greater Edmonton area! Don’t wait until the last minute – take this off your holiday checklist now 🙂

Email me at hello@megankruse.ca to book!

This is the first of two posts from this awesome day in July! This styled session was the result of a collaboration between myself and fellow photographer, Melanie Nichole. With the Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation area as our gorgeous backdrop, beautiful HMUA courtesy of Makeup By Julia, a vintage cowgirl theme and two stunning girls and their steeds to model – it was sure to be a success!

Here is the part of the day that I spent with Courtney and her lovely barrel racing mare, Luna. Don’t they look like they ran away from a Wild West Show? Love it!

Keep an eye out for more from this shoot later this week!

I just LOVE how my work allows me to meet such amazing people! Allison is just such a person. She is absolutely gorgeous, a skilled model, and a talented western reiner. More importantly, she is sweet, endlessly kind and hardworking. And all of that is paying off. This month she was featured in Western Horse Review’s May/June issue as one of the Top 16 under 25 Youth Ambassadors for Western Sport and Culture. Luckily, we found time for a fun western fashion-inspired shoot at the beautiful Heatherdown Hills facility outside Stony Plain. Here’s the first set of photos from our session – gotta love that barn light! More coming soon!

Vantage Trailer Sales Pro Am Competition at the Mane Event 2016While I was down in Red Deer last weekend exhibiting at The Mane Event’s Trade Expo, I was asked to step in to photograph Thursday evening’s Vantage Trailer Sales Pro Am Competition! It was HOOT to watch (and shoot) as amateur youth riders were paired up with world-class professional trainers to race a complex obstacle course filled with poles, boxes, flags, pool noodles and – the worst – kiddie pools! The pros had a blast blazing through the course on unfamiliar horses and the youth riders stole the show with their incredible skill and fierce bravery. Congrats to the the amazing winning team: Emmi – Marshmallow – Scott Purdum! Huge thanks to the folks at Xtreme Wild Rose for inviting me to be in on the action, it was so much fun!!

Back in February, it was my pleasure to meet and photograph Codey, a wonderful local photographer, and her handsome man Rango! First we took a few photos of her littles with their adorable new pony named ‘Princess Purple Biscuit’ (isn’t that the best name for a pony ever?!). The kids were total troopers and were so patient posing out in the cold wind! Princess Purple Biscuit was cool as a cucumber, even though the whole thing was probably a new experience for her  🙂

Codey’s splashy palomino paint Rango then gave us a great show for the camera! He was super playful while we took some liberty photos and then totally calm and snuggly for the portrait session. What a lovely horse – like a giant teddy bear!

Thank you Codey, for having me out to meet your sweet family, both on two legs and four! It was wonderful to meet you and I hope our paths cross again soon!

On a beautiful, sunny late winter day in February, I was beyond delighted to visit Gypsy Horses of Horn Hill in Red Deer, Alberta. I had the great pleasure to meet Kate Walls and her amazing horses and to photograph those horses out in the pasture while they soaked up the sunshine! It was a lovely afternoon spent with great people and I’ve never felt more welcome. In fact, the biggest challenge was trying to stay far enough away from the curious & cuddly horses to fit in them in the frame! Oh yeah, and not taking one home  🙂  Did I mention this is my favourite breed of all time?!

Here’s the first set of photos from that day, featuring Gypsy Horses of Horn Hill’s beautiful broodmares, young stock and a very handsome guy named Lincoln:

I really recommend checking out Gypsy Horses of Horn Hill’s facebook page  – they post great videos! – or visit their website

I love when past clients call me up for a photo session so, of course, when Kassy called me up in December and suggested a Christmas shoot with her boyfriend and furry family members, I was super excited! We got super lucky with the weather and towards the end of the session were treated to the most gorgeous evening light!

It was such a treat to spend the day with these two and their fur family out by Drayton Valley. The dogs and horses were such troopers and behaved so well, even when we got out the Santa hats hahaha  🙂

Just before Christmas, I finally managed to catch up with the winner of the Thanksgiving Gratitude Giveaway contest for her session! Taylor was nominated by her beau, Dylan, who submitted this sweet sentiment to describe why he was thankful for her:

“Taylor is the only woman that’s ever pushed me to do better and be a better man. Also because she is the most caring person I know, with a heart as big as the universe, caring for me and her horses and every other animal on the planet.”

Isn’t that wonderful? I so enjoyed reading everyone’s responses to that contest! Feels like it’s just about time for another one, hey?

Anyways, I was thrilled to catch up with Taylor, Dylan and her palomino mare, Holly, for what turned out to be a beautiful snowy session despite the icy cold wind! We even managed to get a wreath on Holly for some festive photos and snuck in a few couples’ poses too! Thanks for braving the cold for a wonderful session and I wish you two all the best for the New Year!

Mackenzie’s equine grad session in Rimbey was SO much fun! After family portraits under the apple trees and some hilarious photos with her sister and bestie, we went out to the fields for portraits with her beautiful warmblood, Tempo.

I love the incredible people I get meet through my work. Mackenzie is so brilliantly funny, warm, and not to mention, stunning! Even with the threat of rain, this gorgeous girl rocked this session! And isn’t her dress just jaw-dropping?!

Uh oh. Guys, I think it might be fall soon! I’ve been seeing lots of tree starting to change colour on my daily drive and the nights are starting to feel a little crisp. Just let it be summer for a little longer!

To get your mind off the looming change of season, here’s a throwback to a beautiful summery equine photo session at Coal Lake with Caisie and her mare, Cocoa. I just can’t get over Caisie’s adorable dress and cowboy boots combo, Cocoa’s dapples and how perfect that location was! This was a dream session 🙂

Over the May long weekend, I got a chance to spend some time out in the evening sunshine with Mackenzie and her beautiful thoroughbred mare, Arrow. What a lovely pair these two are! Despite the mosquitos, Mackenzie rocked not one, but two great looks – I love the dress and cowboy hat combo! It was such a pleasure to meet these two and tell their story.

Are you thinking about booking an equine session this summer? Here’s some important info you should read!

Wow! I’ve received a lot of emails this week asking about the booking process and how far ahead you should book. Here’s a quick look at how it works:

Your Booking Questions Answered!

How far ahead should I book my session?

If you have a specific date in mind, I recommend booking as soon as possible. If you’re flexible, message me or send me an email – I may have a date available right away!

When are you available?

I’m available some days, most weeknights and weekends. I will be out of the country from July 15th to August 3rd. If you are interested in booking a session in early July or August, please give me a shout now, as I expect to be busy those two weeks in July and I will not be processing bookings while I am away.

How do I book a session?

Touch base with me and let me know you’re interested. I’m happy to answer any of your questions (even silly ones!) and I can send you a copy of my current availabilty. Once you choose a date,  you’ll need to pay your booking fee ($250). I will send you a link to a payable invoice through Square (Visa/Mastercard) or you can send an e-transfer to payments@megankruse.ca. Your booking fee is credited 100% towards your session – so if your total session is $350, you will pay the $250 booking fee to hold your session date, and the remaining $100 will be due the day of the session.

What’s the difference between your booking fee and a deposit?

Not much, except that the booking fee is non-refundable. I spend a lot of time working for you before the actual session happens – answering emails, talking to you on the phone, planning ideas for your session, and driving to the location. This is how I make sure the booking process is fair to me – to ensure that time is paid for should you not be there when I get there.

I make sure the booking process is fair to you by applying 100% of the booking fee to your session total. This means that for a $350 session, once you pay the $250 booking fee, the remaining $100 will be due the day of the shoot. I make sure I’m available by phone, text or email 7 days a week and try my best to always be flexible and fair.

How does rescheduling work?

The weather is what it is and we have no control over it! I keep my eye on the forecast and always err on the side of safety. There is no penalty for rescheduling due to dangerous weather. With 24 hours notice, rescheduling for other reasons may be possible but that is subject to my availability and discretion. Booking fees do not expire as long as you remain in contact* and are transferable for paid value only, like a gift card. *If you cancel your session or do not show up and do not respond to attempts to contact you within 60 days, the booking is considered abandoned and the fee is forfeit.

Too Long, Didn’t Read? -> email hello@megankruse.ca to book 🙂
